Cuisine
Forage for gastronomic gems as you hopscotch between hidden calanques and storied ports. In Cassis, feast like a pêcheur on the famed soupe de poisson, its crusty-bread topping slick with garlicky rouille. Over in Portofino, savor a fritto misto on the quay, the lacy fried anchovies dissolving on your tongue. Beaulieu-sur-Mer's daily market is a symphony of Provençal flavors: plump artichokes, honey-hued immortelle liqueur, goat cheeses oozing ripeness. As for Cannes' glitzy eateries, bypass them for a local's table in Le Suquet, the perfect setting for an aioli-drenched bourride fish stew and unrestrained people-watching.
Historical References
Tread in the footsteps of saints and soldiers, pilgrims and privateers. Palma's stout city walls recall centuries of Moorish rule, shattered by the 13th-century Reconquista. Bonifacio's tottering Haute Ville, straddling dizzying limestone cliffs, once repelled Saracen raiders; today, its battlements survey a wine-dark sea dotted with superyachts. Portofino's petite piazzetta belies its past as a rough-and-tumble whaling station, while Cassis' pastel houses and jaunty fishing boats are a picturesque front for its buccaneering history of rum-running and Resistance derring-do.
Things to Do
Go full Robinson Crusoe in the Calanques National Park, where fjord-like inlets hide bone-white beaches and water of heart-stopping clarity. Kayak through sea-sculpted arches and into glimmering grottoes, or hike the fragrant garrigues in search of swooping kestrels. In Saint-Raphaël, putter along the Corniche d'Or to discover secret snorkel coves and laid-back restaurants where salty skin and sandy toes are de rigueur.
Packing Guide
What to wear to the utterly charming yachting point of Cassis, France? A perfect little floral dress by Agua by Agua Bendita for a day at a family owned winery for her and Thom Sweeney trousers and a t-shirt for him. Go full Riviera in famed towns like Portofino and Saint-Raphael, France where you’ll spend days shopping in opulent boutiques and speed boating in your resort best. Don’t forget to pack a party dress by Alaia or 16Arlington for an evening out in Cannes.
