In Cassis, feast like a pêcheur on the famed soupe de poisson, its crusty-bread topping slick with garlicky rouille. Bonifacio's tottering Haute Ville, straddling dizzying limestone cliffs, once repelled Saracen raiders; today, its battlements survey a wine-dark sea dotted with superyachts. Portofino's petite piazzetta belies its past as a rough-and-tumble whaling station, while Cassis' pastel houses and jaunty fishing boats are a picturesque front for its buccaneering history of rum-running and Resistance derring-do.
